Sudden Drop in Milk Supply?

A sudden drop in milk supply can be concerning and, if you find yourself in this situation, there a few things you can try:

1. Make sure that you are breastfeeding or pumping frequently enough to maintain your milk supply. As exhausting as it sounds, try to breastfeed or pump every 2-3 hours.

2. Check that your baby is latching on correctly, an improper latch can affect milk flow and can make it difficult for your baby to get the milk they need.

3. Becoming a new mom means you often find yourself in stressful situations. Try to relax and avoid stress as much as possible (we know it is easier said than done), because high levels of stress can interfere with milk production.

4. Make sure you're getting enough rest, eating well, and drinking enough water to stay hydrated.

5. Consider taking a lactation supplement, such as fenugreek or blessed thistle, which can help to increase milk supply. Make sure to check with your pediatrician/ lactation consultant before consuming these supplements.

6. Keep in mind that milk supply can fluctuate for many reasons, such as stress, changes in baby's schedule, hormonal changes, and even changes in your diet. A sudden drop in milk supply can be temporary, and your milk supply may increase again after a few days.

7. Keep in mind that combination feeding (breastmilk and formula) can be an option, especially if your baby is not getting enough milk.

8. As always, please consult with a lactation consultant or your healthcare provider for additional guidance, they can help you to identify the cause of the drop in milk supply and recommend appropriate strategies.
